Aleph — End User License Agreement
Effective date: 2026-11-03 Version: 1.0
This End User License Agreement (the "Agreement") is a binding contract between you and Northlane Studio ("Northlane Studio", "we", "us"), the developer of Aleph (the "Software").
By installing, copying, or using the Software you accept this Agreement. If you do not accept it, do not install the Software.
1. What you get
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the Software on computers you own or control, for your own personal or internal business use.
The Software is sold as a one-time purchase: one payment gives you this licence for the version you bought and the updates we publish for it. There is no subscription and no separate "Pro" tier. The price is the one shown at https://northlanestudio.dev/aleph/ when you buy. The licence is granted to you, not sold: we keep all rights in the Software that this Agreement does not expressly give you.
Pre-release (development) builds we may give you before launch are for testing only, may stop working at any time, and do not include a licence to the released Software.
2. What the Software does
Aleph is a local assistant for your files. It builds an index of the names, locations, types, sizes and dates of the files in the folders you choose, and lets you search and open them, including from the floating bar. The index lives on your computer. Some features shown as "with the engine" are not available yet and may change before they arrive.
3. What you may not do
You may not, and may not let anyone else:
- sell, rent, lease, sublicense or distribute the Software, or offer it as a service to others;
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the Software, except to the exact extent that your local law says you may do so regardless of contract;
- remove or alter any copyright notice, trade mark or attribution;
- use the Software to do something illegal, or to infringe somebody else's rights.
Breaking any of these terminates your licence automatically.
4. Your files stay yours
The Software runs on your computer and reads only the folders you point it at. Your files and their contents are not uploaded to us. We claim no rights over your files or your index. If you sign in with a Northlane Studio account, what we store and why is set out in the Privacy Policy, and the account itself is governed by the Terms of Service.
The Software opens files with the program your system has set for them, and can show them in their folder. What those programs do is outside our control.
5. Updates
The Software can check for and install updates automatically; you can turn that off in Settings. Updates are covered by this Agreement. We are not obliged to produce updates, support any particular operating system version, or keep any particular feature forever.
6. Open source components
The Software includes third-party open source components, listed with their licences in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md. Those components are licensed to you under their own licences, not under this Agreement, and where their licence gives you more rights than this Agreement, their licence wins for that component.
7. No warranty
To the maximum extent the law allows, the Software is provided "as is" and "as available", with no warranty of any kind — express, implied or statutory — including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Software will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that it will find every file.
Keep your own backups. Nothing in the Software is a substitute for one.
8. Limits on our liability
To the maximum extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, or the cost of getting replacement software;
- our total liability under this Agreement, for any and all claims, is capped at the amount you actually paid us for the Software in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing in this Agreement limits liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for anything else that cannot be limited under the law that applies to you. If you are a consumer, you keep every mandatory right your local consumer law gives you, and nothing here takes those away.
9. Term and termination
This Agreement runs until it is terminated.
- You can terminate it at any time by uninstalling the Software.
- We can terminate it if you materially break it — most obviously, if you break clause 3.
When it terminates you must stop using the Software and delete your copies. Clauses 4, 7, 8, 10 and 11 survive termination.
10. Governing law and where disputes go
This Agreement is governed by the laws of the United Mexican States, and the courts of Mexico City, Mexico have jurisdiction — except that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in, and you may bring proceedings in your own local courts.
11. The rest
- Whole agreement. This Agreement, plus the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy, is the entire agreement between us about the Software, and replaces anything said before.
- Changes. We may change this Agreement for future versions of the Software. The version that applies to a copy you already installed is the one shipped with it. Continuing to use a new version after a change means you accept the change for that version.
- Severability. If a clause turns out to be unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce something immediately, we have not given it up.
- Assignment. You may not assign this Agreement. We may, as part of a sale or reorganisation of the business, on notice.
